Our vision is to live in a world where young people and their grown ups cultivate community, build resilience and joy and develop coping skills for life. At G&C, experiences will be held in a "no pressure" zone, and specialize in a variety of themes and topics all with the common goal of helping kids from babies- teens thrive. These themes and topics will be woven through yoga and mindfulness classes that encourage young people to improve self-awareness, self-management, social skills, and decision making skills.

our VISION

Welcome!

embodiment
practices

Embodiment is the result that can often come from creating and/or strengthening a mindfulness and movement practice. Embodiment is about feeling whole, exactly as we are. Young people learn to be the designer of their own story–body, mind, and spirit. It allows for them to gain the skills to know that they can always come back to themselves first in times of overwhelm and stress, and view it as a tool for self study and empowerment.

Mindfulness
Practices

This helps cultivate stress management skills as well as help to develop self-awareness, attentiveness and emotional regulation. Practicing mindfulness can help children and teens’ overall well-being and academic performance. By teaching young people to be present in the moment and observe their thoughts and feelings without judgment, or mindfulness empowers them to better manage their emotions and respond to challenging situations with calmness and clarity.

movement
practices

This provides young people with a physical outlet therefore having the potential to decrease impulsivity. Practices such as yoga, and other mindful movement can enhance focus, concentration, self-confidence, and relaxation skills, as well as reduce stress and anxiety.

What do we do?

1. Proving a safe and inclusive space
2. Cultivating community for young people and their grown ups
3. Celebrating individuality
4. Teaching children and teens how to integrate what they learn at G&C into their everyday life
5. Providing opportunities for young people to explore mindfulness, movement and embodiment

Our 5 promises to you

We Are Committed to...

Ground and Center started as an idea born from two educators who wanted to do their part to help fill gaps in our education and healthcare system. We currently live in a world where anxiety, depression, and social/emotional learning needs are on the rise. The demands on children and their grown ups' time/energy are ever increasing in the fast paced society we find ourselves in. With this increase comes a need for space for more active practices such as mindfulness, movement and embodiment strategies to help folks cope with the business of life. We’ve also seen how these widening gaps affect young people in real time.

Christy, having a son with Autism and ADHD has lived the frustration of booking appointments where waiting lists can be up to a year or more out. Therefore, leaving her and her child without the help they seek. Margot, having been working with a wide range of ages both inside and outside of the classroom has seen the challenges that come up when needs aren’t addressed and how they grow bigger as kids get older.

Both Margot and Christy are surrounded by youngsters and their grownups who can use a sense of community with a goal of building resilience and coping skills for life. We all have a role to play, and Christy and Margot have found their role here at G&C. Our story does not include being a replacement for therapy or other means of mental or physical healthcare, but rather a stepping stone, an interim or an “in addition to”. Together, the G&C family is one where we break chains, build community, and provide the next generation with a world surrounded by grace, reflection, and joy.

the story behind the name

About the team at ground & center

Christy is a full time middle school special education teacher, certified yoga instructor for adolescents in grades 6-12, as well as a part time designer, blogger, creator and singer. She may wear many hats, but the most important one is being a Mom to her wonderful and spirited son Mason.

Margot is a full time yoga and mindfulness educator and author for children of all ages working in schools, local businesses and community spaces. She's a former classroom teacher with a background in early childhood education.

Christy and Margot are just two educators looking to make a difference in the lives of Long Island children in conjunction with those that support them everyday. Whoever that may be: Parents, caregivers, educators, administrators, therapists, nurses, grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, friends and more. Their mission is to help children and their support systems meet the challenges of life with more compassion, resilience, and joy.

Bottom Line:

If you love and support children, and want them to learn valuable practices and strategies that are also engaging and fun-- welcome home!
